Photo + Encaustic
Photo Encaustic is truly mixed media. Welcome to my new site for all thing photo, encaustic, and photo + encaustic. I look forward to this being an ever evolving site to not only post some information about my photo encaustic workshops and classes, but also to keep track of some of my experiments with the blending of digital media with physical materials in new and exciting ways!
Sarah Rehmer | Visual ArtistA little about me and my background. I am a Chicago based visual artist who dislikes labels, sort of. I tend to use the term Visual Artist rather than painter, photographer, designer, etc. I feel those singular terms are just too limiting. I like to push my work and use all the tools at my disposal to create. By day I am a graphic designer and photographer - and those skills come into play in my painting studio.
My background is in design and photo. Studio life was in flux for everyone around the time I graduated college - analogue media was ceasing to be and digital was coming around (my first point and shoot digital camera was maybe 3 megapixels.) I was feeling a bit lost with the desire to still be physically involved in the act of making art, I still miss the smell of photo fix - I turned to mixed media work with acrylic. Within a year or so I began experimenting with encaustic medium and paints as a substitute for the acrylic as my glue in my collages. The rest is tactile history.
At the back of my mind I knew I did not want to abandon photography as a tool at my disposal. Early trials on-top of some of my old fiber based darkroom photos were not particularly interesting. I filed that combo away for years and went back to learning all of the technical nuances I could for the materials. After years of working with encaustic and paper, and more affordable inkjet and paper options coming to market, the combining of my two passions where underway. And it just felt right. The physical interaction I needed from my workflow came to be once more.
